5 SIA Training Skills For Door Supervisors
When you’ve finished your SIA licence training, it’s easy to step out into your new career with all of your training still fresh on your mind. The skills you’ve learnt must now be applied, and with time they will come more naturally to you throughout your career.
But if your job has you in a rut, it’s important to keep the following five skills as sharp as possible.
The ability to resolve conflict well
Perhaps you’ve had a quiet couple of weeks. Or perhaps you’ve established yourself as someone not to be messed with. Whatever the reason, if you haven’t seen or been involved in the conflict for a few weeks, then you know it’s been a quiet season. But conflict resolution is not simply a skill that you use at work. Don’t be afraid to practice this in your daily private life too. It’s a skill that will always come in handy throughout your life.
Keenly observant
Never lose your ability to keep an eye out for potentially dangerous situations. A keen and observant eye is a skill that you will learn during your SIA licence training, but it’s also a skill that can become obsolete if not used regularly. Are you still an observant individual at work and at home?
Preparedness & resourcefulness
This is one that too many seasoned doormen forget. After SIA licence training, it becomes clear that all doormen should always keep a list of important contact numbers on them. These should include numbers for fire emergencies, medical emergencies, ambulance, police, locksmith, and others. Don’t let complacency make you forget always to keep these numbers updated, and always keep them handy in case you ever do need them.
People skills
It’s often the case that your doorman job will keep you somewhat isolated from personal and/or conversational human interaction. If your career has brought you to this point, then be sure to practice your people skills every other time. Even though you may not be using them right now, your people skills will likely be called upon later in your door supervisor career.
Physical abilities
When your door supervisor training ends, and you find yourself job searching, regular exercise can be a great confidence booster. It’s also probably a big part of your life if you’re a doorman, but if job comfort have you easing up on the physical aspect of your designation, then you may want to consider a visit to the gym.
Remember that your career should also be at a point where your skills are being honed automatically. If you find that your job isn’t presenting the challenges you need to grow, it may be time to seek out a new employment opportunity where you not only get paid more but your skills are also sharpened on a more regular basis.
