There’s no getting away from it; alcohol is a powerful drug. And while alcohol contributes to the UK economy in terms of jobs, the social costs of crime, unemployment, absenteeism, long-term health problems, and even fatalities are hard to quantify. It’s fair to say that if alcohol had been invented today, it would be unlikely to be legalised.

For this reason, local councils walk a tightrope of granting alcohol licences but trying to keep the community safe. Councils must aim to prevent crime and disorder, including public nuisance, and safeguard public safety, particularly children.

In order for the local government to do this, they grant licences which can be revoked if problems arise. Not every bartender needs a licence, but each premise must have at least one person that holds a licence. That person must have their Award for Personal Alcohol Licence Holder (APLH), which covers how alcohol is sold legally and responsibly and minimises alcohol abuse.

An organisation caught selling alcohol without a licence can be fined heavily, and those responsible can even go to prison for up to six months.

If you are looking to go from a casual bartender to working your way up to being a bar supervisor, manager, or licence holder, taking this course is a great way to improve your skills and qualifications and move on. And the great news is it’s just a short one-day course.

The exam is a multiple-choice test consisting of 40 questions with a pass rate of 70%, meaning you have to answer 28 questions correctly.

Because the course is more about content than physical skills, we have been able to offer the course virtually to offer you maximum flexibility. You can take the course using several options according to your budget and calendar, so read on to find the best option.

Take the course and exam from the comfort of your home

Virtual Course

If you would like to take the course over a full day from 9 am to 4 pm, then simply book a course when you are free all day and have a quiet, undisturbed time at home to take the course. You’ll go through all the course modules with an expert trainer to guide you through the content. Not only will you have access to an expert trainer, but you can also ask questions about anything you are unsure about.

Self-paced course

Choose this option, and you’ll be given access to the learning materials to watch and go through at your own pace. So you can grab an hour here and there. You’ll get access to our e-learning portal and the whole course. You will also get mock exams to practice before the actual exam date, so you can check you are on target to pass. All you need to do is be ready for the exam on the date you have booked. You’ll have a quick call before the exam to check you have everything you need and understand the instructions.

Other Options

You can choose to take a saver package if you are confident of the result. Alternatively, you can select the flexi+ or premium options, allowing you to retake the exam as many times as needed. These two options also allow you to reschedule your course or exam.

If you choose the saver or the flexi+ package, you will then need to send off for your licence. The licence fee is usually  £37, and the criminal background fee is  £32.

But if you really want to save yourself some admin and hassle, then you can choose the premium package. This option covers the licence and criminal background fee and pays for a dedicated application manager.

Don’t like paperwork? Choose the Premium package!

Premium Package

If you choose the premium option, we will write to you asking for any information required. You will need to provide one endorsed passport photo as well as another photo for the physical licence. An endorsed photo should be signed by a respected community member, such as a doctor. You’ll also need to fill out a few forms for the relevant council and sign a statement that you are entitled to work in the UK, but all of these will be posted to you. You then need to post them back to Get Licensed in the pre-paid envelope, which will deal with everything from there.

So, whether you are short on time or short on cash, we have the perfect option for anyone wanting to get their APLH. For a taster of the course, why not take a look or try a mock exam? You can even take advantage of weekly payment plans, so why not book your course today?
