So, a job is a job, right? It almost pays the bills, but is your factory job getting you down?

Some people love factory work. It’s not so taxing on the brain, there’s not often extreme stress, you can chat with colleagues, and it can be like a family with the same old faces. People who work in factories all their lives often have very happy lives with a strong network of friends and community.

And plenty of factory jobs require particular skills, speed and proficiency levels. But Amazon pickers and packers will tell you they barely drink coffee, as they don’t have the time to go to the bathroom and meet their targets.

Many factory jobs also require working with machinery, which requires skill, making the job more interesting and varied. But on the downside, working in a factory is almost as dangerous as working on a construction site or in the fishing industry. Often the cause of the fatality is coming into contact with heavy machinery, a clearly gruesome way to go and a shocking thing to witness. Non-fatal accidents are also common in factory settings, often with horrific injuries when heavy crushing machinery is involved, rather than a slip, trip or fall.

Aside from accidents, if you keep moving the same muscles doing the same thing all day, standing or sitting, you can often develop issues in the arms and legs that can become debilitating over time. Did you know that the excruciatingly painful and debilitating condition of Plantar Fasciitis is very common in factory workers? Research has proved that standing for 10% longer on hard surfaces such as concrete increases the risk of the condition by 30%.

So if factory life is getting monotonous for you, too target-focused, too noisy, too dangerous, and you don’t want to develop health conditions, have you considered security work?

The only barrier to entry is taking a short course with a 90% pass rate over a week. You can then get your licence and get into an exciting career in the security industry, where no day is the same anymore.

The course covers lots of things, including:

Working in the private security industry – covering aspects of health and safety, legal matters, emergency and fire procedures and customer care.

Working as a door supervisor – covering arrest, searches, drug awareness, emergency procedures, civil, criminal and licensing law, and recording incidents following crimes.

Conflict management for the security industry – covering avoiding and diffusing conflict and avoiding personal risk, learning from conflict and applying communication skills.

Physical intervention for the security industry – covering an introduction to physical intervention and legislation.
