Can I Renew My SIA Security Licence Online?

You are able to renew your SIA security licence online approximately 4 months before your current licence expires. Unfortunately, SIA licences do not renew automatically and are therefore required to be renewed after 3 years of first receiving them.

Your current employer has the option to renew your SIA licence on your behalf, however, if that is not an option then you will need to renew the licence yourself.

It is always recommended that you submit your renewal application for your SIA security licence as soon as possible.

Applying early reduces the risk of a delay that might affect your ability to work. Remember, without a valid SIA security licence you are not legally valid to work within the security sector.

As far as costs are concerned, a licence renewal costs the same as a new application (£184) and you should be expected to pay this cost every 3 years to renew your SIA security licence.

Please note that no additional training or qualification is required for a licence renewal unless you are renewing a Door Supervisor Licence.

SIA Licence Renewal Process

SIA security licence renewal is a simple process. You can follow the process below to renew an existing SIA security licence.

Step 1

If you haven’t already done so, create a personal online account on the SIA website. You will need this SIA login.

Step 2

Once created, use your SIA login to access your online account to submit your renewal application. You will be asked for certain personal information – for example, where you have lived within the last 5 years. When you submit your application, you will be told what to do next.

Step 3

Follow instructions as stated on the SIA licence renewal application screen. Once completed you will then be required to pay for your renewal.

SIA may require you to send documents to them. SIA will inform you if documentation is required as part of your application. Once the renewal application is completed, SIA will process your renewal for security licence. This will take approximately 14 days.

How to work in the security sector

If you are interested in working in the security sector, whether it be as a SIA Door Supervisor, Security Guard or CCTV Operative, you will need to obtain a SIA Licence.

To obtain a SIA licence, you will need to complete a course. Once you have completed the course, will you then be able to apply for an SIA Licence and work in the security sector.
