Does Size Matter If You’re A Door Supervisor?

There’s never a bad time to get into shape. It could be you want to shed some pounds or decide you want to beef up and lead a healthier lifestyle. The fact is, looking good is feeling good. But it isn’t all about vanity and well-being.

Some job roles may require you to look big and buff (we’re not talking male strippers here, sorry, ladies). However, a Door Supervisor might be such a role.

While a job in security may require a certain level of fitness and involve breaking up fights or chasing after potential thieves, does it necessarily mean you should look the part? This is an age-old debate, for as we all know, not all security operatives are lean, mean fighting machines with washboard stomachs like Jason Statham. So, we thought we’d offer our insight and try to answer the question: Does size really matter if you’re a door supervisor? To find the answer, let’s fly through the obvious requirements and measure them up against being big.

Fitness Vs brawn

What good is it an 18-stone mound of muscle if you’ve never seen a treadmill? You may look scary and prove effective in warding off potential trouble outside a venue, but what about the rare occasion where you will be tasked to break up a fight between patrons potentially jacked up on drugs, or worse, what if you’re dealing with trained fighters? You’ll need bags of stamina. Trust us!

Brains Vs Biceps

Contrary to what many assume, the role of a doorman isn’t strictly about the physicality of breaking up fights, it’s about preventing them. Vigilance is key. It will take a sharp mind and good reasoning to snuff out trouble before it occurs. There’s an art to it. Studying people’s behaviour, body language, and even the pitch and tone of their voice are all indicators of potential trouble. So, flex those guns all you want; you’ll need to rely on grey matter.

Attitude Vs Aggression

Angry about that shove or shoulder barge off a drunken punter? What about the name-caller who insulted your mother? Guess what? To be truly good in this role, you’ll need the skin of a crocodile. Self-restraint and patience will make you worth your weight in gold. Leave your emotions at the door. (Pun intended)

Customer service Vs Creatine

This role is about engaging with people, it’s about interaction. There’ll be times when people turn to you for help or assistance. You’ll need to be a good communicator. So, contenting yourself with the knowledge that you can bench-press over 100KG won’t count a single rep.

Verdict

Based on the above evidence, it’s fair to say the role of a door supervisor can be challenging at times. There is a constant threat of danger, and arguably, looking big and intimidating could prevent it. But there’s a flip-side to that; it could also goad someone brave (or stupid) enough to try their luck and step to you. But beneath all the macho posturing, safety will always come first, and for that reason, with the right training and attitude, doing the job well shouldn’t necessarily rely on physical prowess.

So, aside from being fit, you need the right mindset and temperament to do this job. Muscles are just a bonus.
