Top-Up and Regular Course Difference
1. I would need a top-up course for security officers. I hear you have to do it three months before my licence expires, does the new licence start when the old one expires or when I do the top-up? That would mean I lose 3 months that I paid for.
Answer: The SIA recommends starting the process to renew your licence up to four months before it expires. However, applying early makes the whole process easier and lowers the chance of having a gap in your licence that could stop you from working.
How to Become a Trainer?
2. Please I want to be a trainer and get licenced. I have both CCTV and Door Supervisor badges.
Answer: Train the Trainer course can enable you to become a Trainer and lead the next group. These 2 are the basic requirements:
- 2 years experience: Firstly, a minimum of 2 years of front-line security experience in the last 5 years in the UK.
- Teaching qualifications: Secondly, you’ll have to complete a few teaching qualifications. You’ll find a full list of these below.

3. Does a door supervisor licence cover security guard or is that a separate one?

Answer: If you’re a Security Officer or Door Supervisor wanting to renew your current licences, the 2-day course is for you. However, if you’re aiming for a Door Supervisor Licence for the first time, you’ll need to take the full 6-day SIA Door Supervisor Course.
Timeline for Getting Badge after Completion
8. Does anyone know How long you get to get your badge once you’ve completed your top-up training?
Answer: After you’ve finished the application, getting your licence and badge can take between 4 to 8 weeks.
