Earning in the Security Sector?

There is often a misconception that those that work in the security sector do not get paid as much or as well as those in other occupations, however, that couldn’t be further from the truth.

That misconception is of course false as often Door Supervisors and Security Guards meet the national minimum wage requirements and, in most scenarios, actually exceed that amount.

How much can a Security Guard earn?

G4S, the world’s leading global security company that provides job opportunities for 1000’s of Security Guards in the UK currently offers £8.07 per hour for their contracted staff.

That would equal to £17,212 per year.

How much can a Door Supervisor earn?

A licenced Door Supervisor on the other hand can earn on average £26,112 per year, a figure that has also increased by £4,143 since 2013.

Ultimately it really does depend on what company or venue you provide security for, and how licensed you are.

The more your skill set and the more security licences acquired, the more your value and worth to a potential employer.

Can i earn more if i have two licences?

Potentially. A licensed Door Supervisor with a CCTV operator licence is a lot more of value then a Door Supervisor without a CCTV operator licence. This also sets you apart in a job market and industry that is constantly looking for qualified security staff with both licences and experience.

Gone are the days when the security industry was considered as the profession for the unskilled people. Today the individuals seeking their career in the security industry have higher degrees and are more ambitious then the perceived narrative.

The security industry is going through this continuous change because of the advancements in the technology and the attitudes of people who know understand that to work in the security sector not requires physical and mental strength and ability, but also a certain skill set and knowledge that is not easy to acquire and obtain.

And as a result, the pay often reflects the job and the people required.

How to work in the security sector

If you are interested in working in the security sector, whether it be as a Door Supervisor, Security Guard or CCTV Operative, you will need to obtain a SIA Licence.

To obtain a SIA Licence, you will need to complete a course. Once you have completed the course, will you then be able to apply for an SIA Licence and work in the security sector.
