1. Do I need to do a first aid course before I do a top-up course?

A. Yes, if you are doing a Top Up Course for your security profession, having a First Aid Certificate is mandatory. This ensures that you possess essential first aid skills required for roles in the UK Security Training.  If you do not have an Emergency First Aid at Work certificate qualification, or higher, you can add this onto your course booking. Remember, this qualification must be valid for at least one year from your course start date.

2. My door supervisors badge is up for renewal, but I just want a security badge now; can this be done and what do I need to do, i.e., for up top training?

A. Certainly, you can downgrade your Door Supervisor License to a Security Guard License by taking the Top Up Security Guard Course. This transition allows for different responsibilities within the security industry and aligns with Security Badge Renewal procedures.
​​This is a very common question, some people when it comes to renewing their licence, especially if they do not work in a premises which sells alcohol, prefer to ‘downgrade’ their licence to a security officer licence. This is because the security officer top-up training course is only one day as a apposed to the DS Top-up course which is 2 days.

But in short, if you do want to do this, you will need to do the security officer top up training course. 

Although, we do suggest keeping the door supervisor licence as it does give you more Job opportunities than a security officer licence. 

3. Don’t we need a medical qualification like EFAW to do the door supervisor because it is provided?

A. Yes, you do need this qualification! Here’s why and how:

What is EFAW?: EFAW stands for Emergency First Aid at Work. It’s a basic first aid training course.

Why Do I Need It for Door Supervisor?:  The Door Supervisor course requires that you know how to handle medical emergencies. EFAW ensures you have these skills.

I Don’t Have EFAW; What Now?: Good news! You can add this qualification to your Door Supervisor course booking. In fact, it’s part of the Security Industry Authority (SIA) training package.

Any Other Requirements?: Just remember, your EFAW qualification must be valid for at least one year from your Door Supervisor course start date.

Firstly, understanding the requirements for the Door Supervisor course doesn’t have to be confusing. Moreover, with EFAW as a mandatory part, you’ll be equipped to handle emergencies and fulfil your responsibilities in your new role in security. 4. I have experience of working in the Nepalese Army; how can I get a licence?

A. Your military experience is valuable, but the requirements for obtaining a Door Supervisor License or Security Guard License in the UK remain consistent. You must Fulfil the standard criteria, including taking the necessary SIA courses before you can apply for your SIA licence.

5. Can we get an SIA CCTV Licence from outside the UK?

A. Unfortunately, obtaining an SIA CCTV License from outside the UK is not possible. To begin with, you must be physically present and moreover, have the right to work in the UK. Only then can you attend the required training course and apply for the licence.

6. I have got a record, but I was in trouble for GBH; it was maybe 14 or 15 years ago. Would my record stop me from getting a badge now?

Generally speaking, the Criminal Record Check for a Security Guard Licence examines the past 5 years. 7. How long will it take for a DBS check for international students applying for DS?

A. The Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) Check for a Door Supervisor Licence typically takes 1-2 weeks. However, contacting the SIA directly will provide more detailed information for international students.

8. Hey, I used to be an armed security back in Jamaica; just migrated to the UK; can I apply for an SIA Licence?

A. Welcome to the UK! Your previous experience in armed security is valuable, and you are eligible to apply for an SIA course and licence, including the Security Guard Licence or Door Supervisor Licence.

9. Thanks for the video, sir. Do I need a bank statement along with a driving licence and passport? I have different addresses on the bank statement and driving licence.

A. You must have your current address on both your Security Guard and Door Supervisor Licence applications. If your Proof of Address documents like a bank statement and driving licence show different addresses, you may need to fix this inconsistency to meet SIA requirements. 10. What about the first aid certificate; how’s that work? Can you do it online?

A. The First Aid Certificate course is often offered alongside SIA courses. It is typically conducted in-person on the first training day, as hands-on practice is vital to ensure you can perform the necessary Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) skills.
