What Is The SIA And How Do They Regulate The Country?
If you’re considering to work in the security sector, you will frequently hear the mention of SIA, whether it’s to do with acquiring a badge or undergoing training for a specific licence.
So, what is the SIA exactly and what do they do?
SIA stands for ‘security industry authority’. They are the organisation responsible for regulating the private security industry.
Previously, there had been little or no self-regulation within the security sector and this severely affected practicing standards. While some security operatives may have performed their job professionally, others had not maintained the said requirements.
This is how the SIA came into being. Formed in 2001 to regulate the private security industry in England and Wales, it then spread to Scotland in 2007 and Northern Ireland in 2009. This all stemmed from the Private Security Industry act 2001.
Okay, enough about history, what do they do?
Protect the public – ensuring that only fit and proper people and organisations deliver and meet the standards expected of the regulated private security services.
Customer service – Deliver services which meet the demands of the customer.
Developing people – Ensuring that security staff are sufficiently trained and skilled to perform their roles effectively.
So, there it is. All you need to know about the SIA and what they aim to produce.
